Mary Somerville

Mary Somerville, the first person to be called a “scientist” was born in Jedburgh in 1780. The formula in this square is the formula for the period T of a pendulum – T = 2 Square root o f V , where L is the length of the pendulum and g is the acceleration due to gravity. In her book “Mechanism of the Heavens” Mary Somerville discussed gravity and the swing of a pendulum.
