Motorbike Racing

The Borders has a fine history of producing motorbike racers.

Jimmie Guthrie (Hawick, 1897-1937) achieved 19 European Grand Prix wins, 3 North West 200 wins and 6 Isle of Man TT wins.

Steve ‘Hizzy’ Hislop (Hawick, 1962-2003) racked up an Isle of Man TT win and was twice British Superbikes Champion. There are two identical Hizzy statues, one in Wilton Lodge Park in Hawick and one on the Isle of Man. Steve died in a helicopter crash in the hills above Teviothead in 2003 and the Hizzy Cairn has become a spot of pilgrimage with a visitors’ book containing tributes from fans from around the world.

Every year in August, Wendy Oliver from TB Oliver’s garage in Denholm organises a Hizzy Run which attracts hundreds of bikers who complete the route around the Borders raising money for charity.
