Sheep have been grazing on the border hills since at least the 12th century.
Sheep production in Scotland is concentrated in the South of Scotland, with Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders the home to 31% of all the breeding sheep.
In 2018, Scottish Borders Council ran a competition for schools to design a welcome panel for the Tapestry Centre. Many of the entries from various schools featured sheep.
